Switch 2 storage guide

Switch 2 microSD Express: what cards actually work?

Short answer: for Switch 2 game storage, look for microSD Express or the EX mark. Old microSD cards are not a safe game-storage purchase.

Can you reuse an old Switch microSD card?

You can reuse an old Nintendo Switch microSD card for captured screenshots and videos. Do not treat that card as Switch 2 game storage. Nintendo's support page says a previously used microSD card will not let you save or load Switch 2 digital games or save data.

If the product page says microSD, microSDHC, microSDXC, UHS-I, UHS-II, A1, or A2 but does not clearly say microSD Express or EX, use caution. Those labels alone do not prove Switch 2 game-storage compatibility.

What should you buy first?

Situation Conservative choice Reason
You mostly buy physical games Use internal storage first Switch 2 has 256 GB system storage, although some space is reserved by the system.
You buy a mix of physical and digital games 512 GB microSD Express Enough room for several larger downloads without jumping straight to a premium card.
You are building a family or mostly digital library 1 TB or 2 TB microSD Express Multiple users, updates, DLC, and digital libraries can fill internal storage quickly.

What does not go on a microSD Express card?

Save data stays in system memory. Nintendo says game save data cannot be saved or copied to a microSD Express card. For supported titles, Nintendo Switch Online Save Data Cloud is the relevant backup path.

External USB hard drives are also not currently supported for expanding Switch 2 storage, based on Nintendo's public data management FAQ reviewed for this page.
